God Destroyer
I engaged in a heated debate with the person behind the website God Destroyer on a message board earlier this week. He was teeing off on Islamic beliefs, spouting out how 9/11 completely changed his worldview, and decrying “religion” as the basis of all of the problems in the world today.
Let me be straight up: I think he’s a crackpot. In all of our dialogue, he was only able to convince me of two things:
- He’s an angry young man with an agenda, choosing his words carefully to incite the strongest reaction in readers, and
- He’s extremely proficient at copying and pasting from Wikipedia.
However, in the interest of fairness, over the next few days I’ll be digging deeper into each of the posted arguments from his website, one by one, and responding to them. Some of his points I agree with. Some are muddy and grey. Others are complete bollocks of the highest order. We’ll see where this goes.
Right up front, know this about me: I’m no big fan of organized religion either. As I posted in an earlier incarnation of this website: “if, after 2000 years of tradition, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are the pinnacle of what Christianity has to offer, then I want nothing to do with it.” However, unlike Mr. Goddestroyer, I don’t believe that causes of faith and belief are lost causes. I don’t blame all of society’s problems on Jesus/Allah/Buddha/The Pope/etc. and their followers. And besides, I’m a sucker for a good argument. I’m kind of a jackass that way.
This should be fun.
